How Much Paint Do You Need for an Accent Wall? An Honest Answer (and a Free Calculator)

For a typical 9-foot by 15-foot accent wall painted in two coats, you need about a gallon of paint. One can. Roughly $30 to $75 depending on the brand. That's the short answer.

Here's the longer answer most calculators won't give you: the moment your wall has a door, a window, or you're going from off-white to navy, the math gets weirder than expected. So we built Walltly, a free accent wall paint calculator that handles the weird parts and tells you the cost in dollars, not just gallons.

Why an accent wall needs its own calculator

Search "paint calculator" and you'll find tools from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and a handful of contractor sites. They all assume you're painting a whole room. Four walls. Sometimes the ceiling. Always the same color.

That's not the project most people are doing.

The accent wall trend on TikTok and Pinterest pulled millions of first-time painters into a Saturday project that's specifically *one wall*. Often a bold color. Often over a lighter base. The full-room calculators give you numbers that are wrong for this — usually too high, sometimes too low if you don't account for extra coats.

A proper accent wall paint calculator does three jobs the big tools skip:

  • Treats one wall as the whole project, not a fraction of a room
  • Subtracts the door or window taking up real estate on that wall
  • Tells you what coverage looks like when you go from cream to a saturated color

That's the whole reason Walltly exists. No login, no email, no brand pushing their product. You type in the wall, you get the number.

How much paint for one accent wall, really?

Paint coverage runs about 350 square feet per gallon on a smooth wall and 300 on a textured one. So for a standard 9 ft tall, 15 ft wide accent wall (135 sq ft), one coat eats roughly 0.39 gallons. Two coats brings you to 0.77. You're buying one gallon either way, because no one sells you 0.77 of a can.

But that 135 sq ft is theoretical. Real walls have stuff on them.

Subtract a standard door (3 ft × 7 ft = 21 sq ft) and you're at 114. Add a standard window (3 ft × 5 ft = 15 sq ft) and you're at 99. Suddenly two coats only needs about 0.57 gallons. Still one can, but now you're confident you won't run short and you also won't end up with two extra cans on the garage shelf.

This is the work Walltly does in real time as you type. The number changes as you change your mind.

How much does it cost to paint an accent wall?

The painful gap in every free calculator: they tell you gallons, then make you do the dollar math yourself in the Home Depot aisle. Walltly does it for you with three honest tiers based on current US retail pricing:

  • Budget: about $30 a gallon (store brands, basic finish)
  • Mid-range: about $55 a gallon (Behr Premium Plus, Valspar Signature)
  • Premium: about $75 a gallon (Benjamin Moore Regal, Sherwin Williams Duration)

For most accent walls, you're spending between $30 and $80 on the paint itself. Add a roller cover, a brush, painter's tape, and a drop cloth and you're looking at maybe $50 to $120 for the whole project. Walltly prints a shopping list with the supplies checked off so you don't get to the store and forget the tray liner.

Do I need primer for a dark accent wall?

Probably yes, and this is where first-time painters lose money.

Going from a light wall to a deep navy, terracotta, forest green, or anything saturated usually takes three coats unless you prime first. Primer is cheaper than paint, dries faster, and lets the color sit true. Skip it and you'll either buy a third gallon of expensive paint or live with patchy coverage that drives you crazy every time the afternoon light hits it.

Walltly's calculator flags this automatically. Pick three coats and a tip pops up explaining the dark-color situation. Pick one coat and a gentler note suggests two might be safer for color changes. We're not trying to upsell you — there's nothing to sell. We just want you walking into the store knowing what you're doing.

How many gallons of paint for one wall?

For almost every accent wall under about 250 square feet, the answer is one gallon. The calculator rounds up to whole cans because that's what the store sells. You're not going to find a half-gallon of Behr in a paint aisle.

The cases where you need two gallons:

  • Walls over roughly 250 sq ft (think a 12-foot ceiling and a wide span)
  • Three coats on a bigger wall
  • Textured walls eating coverage faster than smooth drywall

Walltly handles all three. It rounds your gallons up to the next can, shows you the exact paintable square footage, and updates the moment you toggle smooth or textured.

What about smooth versus textured walls?

Coverage on textured drywall — orange peel, knockdown, the popcorn-ish stuff some 90s builds have — runs about 14% lower than smooth. That doesn't sound like much until you're at the edge of needing a second can. A 200 sq ft wall in two coats on smooth drywall is one gallon. The same wall textured, in three coats, tips into two-gallon territory.

There's a toggle for this in Walltly. Smooth is the default because most accent walls in modern apartments and homes are smooth, but if you're painting a textured wall, that switch matters more than people think.

Why we built it without an account

Every paint calculator we tried wanted something. Sherwin-Williams routes you toward their products. Benjamin Moore's tool is clean but bare and won't price anything. The contractor calculators (PaintScout, magicplan, AroFlo) are built for painting businesses and cost real money. None of them isolate an accent wall, and none output a cost.

Walltly is free and ad-supported. No account, no email, no upsell, no premium tier. If you find it useful enough to bookmark for the next project, that's the whole win. The free tools above will always exist; we're just trying to be the one that actually answers the question you came in with.

Try the calculator

Plug in your wall dimensions, subtract the door and window, pick a coat count, and pick a paint tier. You'll get gallons, cans to buy, and a dollar estimate in under 90 seconds. Print the shopping list, head to the store, and paint the wall.

Walk out with the right paint. That's the whole point.
