One pace produces four very different finish times, and the spread between a 5K and a marathon at that same pace is where most goal-setting quietly goes wrong. The tables below run a full range of paces across the four standard race distances, line up min/mile against min/km and treadmill speed, and pin the exact certified distances the solver above computes against. Nothing here needs the calculator; it is the reference you consult before you ever type a number.
Race pace band
Read down the left column to your goal pace, then across to the race you are training for. Imperial and metric paces share each row, so a runner who thinks in 4:58/km and a runner who thinks in 8:00/mi land on the same marathon time without converting anything first. Finish times assume an even effort across the whole distance.
Pace and speed side by side
A treadmill console reads in speed; a training plan reads in pace. This table sits the two next to each other at the paces runners actually hold, so setting a belt is a lookup instead of mental arithmetic. Belts step in 0.1 mph increments, and near 8:00/mi a single arrow press is worth roughly seven seconds per mile, so round to the closest speed your machine offers.
Certified race distances
Every finish time above rests on an exact course length, and the standard races are certified to the metre rather than the round kilometre. Those trailing metres are not rounding noise: at marathon effort the 195 m past 42 km costs the better part of a minute on the finishing clock, so the values below feed the presets and every split unchanged.
What the pace solver accepts
The solver takes the shorthand runners already type and normalises it to hours, minutes, and seconds before it computes. Anything outside the valid range is refused with an inline hint rather than quietly accepted, so a mistyped goal never rides silently to the start line.
Valid ranges: pace 1:00 to 59:59 per unit, finish time one second to 24 hours, and distance above zero up to 100 mi (160.9 km). An entry past any of those edges holds the result back until it is fixed.

- Even vs variable pacing. The splits here assume steady effort; many raced bests come from a slight negative split, running the back half a few seconds per mile quicker than the front.
- Grade adjustment. Each 1% of sustained incline adds roughly 12 to 15 seconds per mile at moderate effort, which is why a 1% treadmill setting is the common stand-in for flat outdoor running.
- Race-time equivalency. Systems like Daniels' VDOT predict a time at one distance from a result at another; this reference converts a single known pace and does not model that distance-to-distance jump.
- Cadence and stride. Pace is cadence multiplied by stride length; most runners hold 170 to 185 steps per minute and change pace mainly by lengthening or shortening the stride.
- Track geometry. A standard outdoor track measures 400 m in lane one, so 12.5 laps make 5,000 m, while lane eight runs about 453 m per lap.
